SOLD - "The Indian War of 1864; Being A Fragment Of The Early History Of Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado And Wyoming" - Hardcover, 6" x 8", 601 Pages. Original 1911 Edition by Eugen F. Ware. Much wear to the outside of the binding, pages are relatively clean and tight.

Ware's exciting eyewitness historical account of his duty during the Indian Wars. He portrays the harrowing life of the US Cavalry on the frontier during the American Civil War. The Indians used the strife, with the encouragement of the Confederacy, to try to stop white settlement on their ancestral hunting grounds.

At this time, the Indians could still hold their own militarily since the repeating rifle, which gave the decisive edge to the white man, would not become common until about 1870 & military supply was confined to ox-drawn wagons; as the Transcontinental Railroad would not be completed until 1869.

His eyewitness account of this struggle, the Indian way of life & the overwhelming Western emigrant flow illustrates the impending doom of the various Plains Indian cultures that would occur in the 1870's.
