WW1 American Field Service Insignia

The Soldier's museum would like to thank our Sponsors whose generous donation of time and resources has made this gallery page possible.

This large (100 mm wide) cap badge is made from die struck bronze. There are very slight traces of gilding on the wingtips. It is fastened to the cap by a threaded lug in the center, and a set of prongs at each wingtip.

This particular style is seldom encountered, although repros exist. The repros usually have a simple pinback fastener, and show minimal aging.

This 75 mm wide cap badge is made from die cast bronze. It is fastened to the cap by a threaded lug in the center, and a set of prongs at each wingtip.

This particular example was worn by volunteer Avery Wolff, SSU 663. I have another example that is also cast, with a European-style pinback.

This style of hat badge is often encountered. An almost identical badge, reading "American Field Service" instead of "Service Aux Armees", was worn by American volunteers serving with the British during WW2. It is die struck, and is usually found with either the typical British cotter pin and rings fastening system, or in pinback.
