Scarce US Navy Model 1841 Officer's Dress Chapeau with Case
Save: 55% off
This is a nice and very scarce Model 1841 US Naval Officer's Dress Chapeau for a Junior Officer. The only other example I could find is in the USS Constitution Museum in Boston. Includes the hand-constructed "tin" Carrying Case, as well as a hand-sewn flannel-lined cotton protective cover stenciled in large letters "Lowell, Mass. 31 3/4". The Hat is made by "Rhoades Manufacturer, Boston", and the liner is also marked in ink "Lewis". The Eagle and Anchor Button dates between 1837 and the early 1850's according to the Book "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865". Shows age and some deterioration of course, but does not have any of the the insect/rodent damage usually associated with silk and beaver Hats of this age.
Includes the tin Box for Officer's "Banjo" Epaulettes, from the same collector's estate and marked on the back with the same Accession Number as the Hat Tin. Collector's interest was local history, with a focus on Fort Armstrong (1816-1836, and later the Rock Island Arsenal).
