This is great set of Binoculars with Case, meticulously crafted in France with all markings HAND ENGRAVED!. Binoculars measure 13cm tall and 12.5cm across the face (5 13/16" x 4 7/8"). Engraving reads "LA REINE - PARIS - SUPERIOR LENSES". Optics are clear and in focus. The leather covering is of very high-quality, with no powdering or chunks missing as you usually encounter - there is a seam in the leather that has split which you can see in the first photo (bottom left), but I forgot to take a close-up photo. The focusing knob is of hard rubber, as came into use in the 1850's.

The Binoculars Case is hand made of thin wood covered in a quality thin lacquered leather. You can see hand-stitching, with some stitches so well-done it is hard to tell if it was hand done or was done with the aid of some kind of tool. The condition of the leather and lacquering is consistent with what you would expect to see in an item from the Civil War. The Shoulder Strap also shows age but surprisingly, it is still in one piece.
