I bought this as a WW2-era Reichsbahn Visor Hat Insignia, and only recently verified the time period based on a photo (see last pic) posted by a collector. Surplus WW2 Hat Insignia continued to be used in the 1950's by the East Germans (second from last photo shows an example). Wingspan is 53 mm, with the mounting prongs spaced 35 mm apart.
